This survey was conducted over three separate dates (May 7, 8, and 13) in spring 2009 at the Wooded Hillock at University of Maryland, College Park. Surveying took place in the morning hours, generally from about 8:00am to 10:00am. It was a species count survey, meant to record the diversity of the species supported by the hillock, rather than the total number of individual birds. The species list is divided into categories of residents, migratory breeders, and transients. Explanation for each of these terms is given at the beginning of each section. The species are presented in taxonomic order by family, with both the common and the scientific name given.
